PRESS RELEASE – Tuesday, June 20, 2017
— We are grief-stricken by the horrific slaying of Nabra Hassanen in Virginia —
We, members of the Evergreen Islamic Center of San Jose, California, are grief-stricken by the brutal assault and murder of 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen near her mosque in Sterling, Virginia. That the life of this observant, vibrant Muslim girl was snatched away in the holy month of Ramadan makes the killing all the more devastating.
At the same time, we are heartened by the enormous outpouring of support and sympathy for the victim and her family by Americans from all walks of life, irrespective of faith and race. Right-wing ideologues have been fanning the flames of anti-Muslim hysteria and racial prejudice for some time now but we will defeat them. We pledge to work tirelessly with our fellow-Americans in ensuring that hate, prejudice and violence do not permeate our society, instead, that love, compassion and unconditional respect for one another will.
